Geo-Extreme 2025 Preview #2: The 1928 St. Francis Dam failure

Industry News

The Geo-Institute is offering a free preview of Geo-Extreme 2025 with a livestream on the 1928 St. Francis Dam failure at 2 p.m. EDT August 26.

In this session, Michael Bennett of Virginia Tech will present “Death in the Canyon: The 1928 St. Francis Dam Breach,” a deep dive into one of the most catastrophic dam failures in U.S. history.

In the early hours of March 12, 1928, the sudden collapse of the St. Francis Dam in California unleashed nearly 12.4 billion gallons of water. The resulting flood swept through communities over 50 miles downstream, claiming more than 400 lives and leaving a lasting legacy on dam safety regulations.

The 2025 conference will bring together geo-engineers, climate scientists, emergency managers, resilience experts, insurance professionals, and policymakers to address both man-made and natural extreme events – from hurricanes and floods to droughts, wildfires, landslides, and more – in the context of a changing climate.
